Earlier this week, I kicked of a series of posts about processing winter’s challenges with some exercises focused on the winter sky.
The post was an invitation to observe, journal, and maybe even add some colors to take note of the modulations over a few days.
I had my reasons for starting out the series this way.
Winter skies where I live in the Pacific Northwest can seem endlessly dreary if I’m not paying attention to them closely. They become this brooding force that shapes my mood, and therefore an easy scapegoat for acting out.
It’s only when I stop to notice - like really notice, like in this watercolor journal I made a couple years ago - do I start to recognize the dynamic nature of the sky even on rainy days.
This got me wondering how others feel about the winter sky where they live - and of course, what you might have noticed this week.
With that in mind, what did you notice sky-wise this week? And what feelings do you have about winter skies more generally?
The grey winter light gets me down as well. However, here in the Highlands of Virginia, we've had some extraordinary sky scenes lately - intense morning and evening sky colors, pink, salmon, fiery orange; and not only spectacular colors but also strange cloud formations that have been interesting to watch.
Winter sunsrises and sunsets can be so spectacular! The longer angle of the sun seems to have an intensifying effect on those times of day. Sounds like it has been a beautiful week there.
I've had the same skies (what with also being in the PNW), but I think what I notice more is the quantity or overall color of the light this time of year. Some days are brighter, some dim, some feel blanketed by cool grey light, others blinding with whiteness.

I'm so curious to know where you live! I love the idea of taking time to take notice of the tonal differences of gray days.
Just north of Seattle. Always happy to find other PNW neighbors!
