Ahh, April the busiest month of spring. Who needs a break right now? Let’s take some time to engage in our senses and find some grounding along the way.
Here are three ways to “get sensory” in April and explore spring at its most vibrant.
1. Make an arrangement of fragrant spring flowers (~10 minutes or less)
Spring continues its olfactory offerings as we make our way towards May, with the frangrant smells of lilacs, peonies, irises, and roses on the way.
Take advantage of this aromatic moment and gather some of your favorite spring flowers together into a vase and set it in a favorite space in your house.
And enjoy the scents of the season.
2. Observe the release of tree pollen (as much or as little time as you like)
It’s almost impossible for those of us with spring allergies to avoid the “sensory” experiences of springtime pollen as we do battle with its inflammatory effects.
And yet, how much have you thought about what’s happening beyond your body’s immune system when the coat of yellowish dust appears?
Pollination is happening all around us, new life is beginning, and as spring turns to summer, cones and seeds will begin to grow.
Take a moment to watch the pollen in the air (perhaps, if needed, from inside your home) and remind yourself that you are witnessing the very beginnings of the life of trees that might still be alive and growing more than century from now.
3. Get creative with spring colors (~1 hour or more)
Spring is a season of color vibrance with hues and color combinations that change each week.
It’s a great time to engage with your creative side and do a little color theory exploration before the summer stillness sets in.
So book a date with yourself to explore spring blossoms with your favorite creative tool.
That might be a camera or smart phone, a journal or sketchbook and paint, or perhaps whatever’s in your closet that you like to wear.
Maybe share your play with color on social media…or don’t! That part is completely up to you.
If you do want to share your creative side, we are here for it. Go ahead and add to the comments below.
What’s on your sensory radar right now? Any sights or smells (or tastes, for that matter) of spring that are getting you excited for the months ahead?
